Statua della Fede Santo Varni |
"Statue of Faith" was sculpted by Santo Varni in the late 1800's. It sits at the center of the Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno, established in 1851, in Genoa, Italy. Santo Varni was an Italian sculptor active mainly in and around Genoa. He began his training at the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti, where he was a pupil of Giuseppe Gaggini. He moved to Florence, where he was a pupil of Lorenzo Bartolini. Varni is represented by more than forty works at the Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno. Our "Allegory of Faith" window was commissioned from the Gorham Manufacturing Co, Stained Glass division, in 1907. The Stained Glass division was short lived. The whole Gorham Company went through a rapid downsizing in the mid-1980s. Many records unfortunately did not survive.Who was the artisan for our window?
What model, inspiration, did he/she use? We may never know for sure.
