Matthew - winged man Mark - winged Lion Luke - winged ox or bull John - eagle or roc |
A tetramorph (Greek, four shape) were four angelic beings depicted twice in the Bible.
"the four had the face of a human being, the face of a lion on the right side, the face of an ox on the left side, and the face of an eagle"
Ezekiel 1:10
"the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with a face like a human face, and the fourth living creature like a flying eagle."
Revelation 4:7
"Matthew is the man because he begins with a genealogy; Mark is the lion, roaring in the desert with prophetic power; Luke is the ox, because he begins with temple sacrifice; and John is the eagle, flying heavenwards like the divine Word."
St Jerome, 347-420

Also please note the orientation of the pews in the North Transept. Not the best to view the Altar or the Priest during the Service. These pews were free, unnumbered, for people who could not afford to pay for a better seat. In the 1800's, families would pay for a numbered pew in the Nave, where they would always sit. Pew #6 was owned by the Gould family.
